The determinants of outsourcing and off-shoring strategies in industrial districts: evidence from Italy
Résumé
Outsourcing has become more and more a distinguished feature of the recent evolution of industrial districts and constitutes the object of this study. We focus on the industrial district of Castel Goffredo, which is the largest European manufacturing area specialised in tights. We analyse the determinants of outsourcing as function of firms' specific characteristics and how they affect the geographical reach of outsourcing relations. The firm level analysis provides insights about the impact of firm heterogeneity on outsourcing strategies and contributes with new evidence to the understanding of the evolutionary paths of industrial districts.
