This paper deals with the Russian enclitic particle –to, which is derived from the distal demonstrative tot. It has three aims : 1) to show that –to is an intersubjective particle opposing the point of view expressed in the utterance to an alternative point of view which is presented as pre-existing, although it remains implicit. The particle takes different meanings depending on the different subjective instances that may support the implicit point of view to be recovered ; 2) to explain how the demonstrative determiner tot, when it was placed after the noun (which is in Russian a non-canonical position), can have evolved into an invariable discursive particle whose scope may belong to any part of speech ; 3) to explain why –to is frequently used as a topic marker : the intersubjective opposition marked by the particle sets the discursive framework which conditions the interpretation of the whole utterance.
