The problem of the interaction between phonological and graphic systems arises under a particularly interesting light for a “non-linear phoneme” such as aspiration, /h/, in Ancient Greek. To its unique phonological status corresponds an inconstant graphic history on the one hand - /h/ is first written by a letter, then abandoned, and finally reappears as a diacritic sign -, and an original and insightful grammatical analysis, on the other hand: not as a minimal “element” of the language, but as a “prosody” along with tones and vocalic length. This paper proposes to shed light on the relationship between these three components – phonology, writing system, grammatical analysis – and its evolution over the course of Greek Antiquity.
