The ancient lapidary collection of Narbonne
La collection lapidaire antique de Narbonne
Résumé
Narbonne’s lapidary collection is now amongst the most remarkable museum collections.
It is a major component of the future Musée Régional de la Narbonne Antique, to the extent
that the prestigious Foster + Partners firm, who are in charge of the architectural
project, made it the backbone of the future building. Yet, originally these scattered blocks
from funeral monuments erected in ancient necropolises were not intended for a shared
destiny, nor for any heritage related purpose. It is along an atypical and somewhat unusual
path, marked by certain influential characters of that time, that they traversed two
millennia to constitute the Musée Lapidaire de Narbonne (Narbonne Lapidary Museum),
a museological treasure of the 19th century preserved in the Notre-Dame-de-Lamourguier
church, before opening up to the 21st century under the curatorship of the MuRéNA.
