DES PRATIQUES RECRÉATIVES RÉVÉLATRICES DE CONFLITS ETHNO-RACIAUX : LA COULEUR CONTROVERSÉE DES PLAGES DE GUADELOUPE

Résumé

This article analyses the tension between Guadeloupian Creoles and European French over recreational seaside and maritime practices. Inspired by the sun-chasing tradition of the late nineteen sixties, many young European French sports enthusiasts moved to the Guadeloupian coast. The coastal areas where they settled were not devoid of occupational and recreational practices, however ; indeed, Creole culture had long used the local beaches and coastal waters, albeit differently. Our research is based on a qualitative sociological survey conducted in Guadeloupe along with semi-structured interviews and participant observation. It points up competing interactions between Creole and European French maritime identities. The findings are organized into three sections. The first section examines the shift from post-1968 environmentalism towards forms of neo-colonialism. The second section analyses Creole seaside practices and helps deconstruct the common European view that « Guadeloupians turn their backs to the sea » ; it calls for a nuancing of theses about the « lure of the sea ». The last section compares ethno-phenotypic, social and territorial inequalities of use in a particularly sought-after territory, the coast.
MOTS CLÉS : GUADELOUPE, NÉOCOLONIALISME ENVIRONNEMENTAL, CONFLIT ETHNO-RACIAL, ACTIVITÉS NAUTIQUES ET BALNÉAIRES SUMMARY : Abstract: This article analyses the tension between Guadeloupian Creoles and European French over recreational seaside and maritime practices.
