The archaeological research who were dedicated to the question of the Roman hydraulic installations in Tunisia were concerned only with the extra-urban networks, mainly aqueducts and Water Temples, and in particular notable constructions such as thermal baths and cisterns. These works focussed primarily on the historic and architectural study of buildings rather than a consideration of the supply problem, the evacuation of the waters, or the relationship of these monuments to the water supply of the rest of the city. Therefore, we decided that our approach to water distribution would include a study of the whole infrastructure for water distribution within a city; this study has focussed particularly on the city of Uthina. Besides the survey work and study on site, we made a model of the cisterns, the arrival of the aqueduct and the “castellum divisorum“. The site modelling of Uthina allows us to replace buildings in their relative position, and to restore the whole hydraulic network. The 3D modelling can reproduce the necessary simulations to enable an understanding of the function of the network and inform hypotheses about their restoration.
