The successful use of cooperative purchasing in North-American professional sport leagues.

Résumé

Since the mid-1970s, the academic literature about purchasing has been expanding, also reflecting the move from an operational approach to a strategic vision. One of the consequences has been the emphasis on win-win situations; for instance, in order to increase their individual competitiveness, organizations might successfully use coopetition through group purchasing. Based on existing research in the purchasing field, this article adopts an original approach about sports. The objective is to examine how the concepts of consortium sourcing and pooling can be used to understand the benefits the North-American professional sport leagues get for the acquisition of players and, more generally, of human capital. Topic: Purchasing organization, skills and competences.
