Jean Malalas et la mémoire d'Antioche. La construction de l'espace et du temps dans la Chronique: l'exemple d'Epiphania

Résumé

It’s well known that the Chronographia of John Malalas devotes special attention to references to monuments. Indeed, constructions, reconstructions or restorations of buildings punctuate accounts of each "reign". Thus, the founding of a city, the visit of an Hellenistic king (or, later, of a Roman emperor), imperial gifts after an earthquake, or the architectural programs developed by a sovereign in a city are for the chronicler opportunities to dwell on the most remarkable and the most significant monuments in the urban space, to the extent that the chronicle has been described as "a record of public buildings." Paradoxically, references to monuments are numerous, but descriptions are scarcely detailed. Malalas usually reports that monuments are "beautiful", "great", "numerous", that they received a particular name (or that their name has been changed). Sometimes, he notes an inscription, reports an architectural detail, mentions an ornament or describes a statue or a mosaic nymphaeum. More frequently, he adds topographical details. In the case of Antioch, Malalas’ home-town, for which mentions of monuments are particularly numerous, we notice two characteristics. First, because of his intimate knowledge of the Antiochean urban space, Malalas locates each monument in its geographical and architectural environment, giving seemingly precise indications, but his reference system remains implicit. Second, Malalas portrays the monuments of Antioch by overlapping extension in space and the thickness of time. The result is a complex and original way of "saying Antioch,". This paper will attempt to understand and to evaluate the result of such a process through the case stydy of Epiphania area.
