Past fuel managements strategies at Central Western Patagonian environments: anthracology at El Chueco 1 site (11500 - 2500 cal. B.P.)

Résumé

The relations between humans and the environments they inhabit are of utmost importance when studying regional archaeologies that assess the knowledge and exploitation of resources by past hunter-gatherer societies. The anthracological methods were used to study charcoal material from "El Chueco 1" archaeological site, located at the upper Cisnes river valley (Central Western Patagonian steppe ~44° S). This site presents an interesting case study for understanding fuel management strategies since the terminal Pleistocene, the Pleistocene-Holocene transition and the Holocene at the Central-Western Patagonia. Patagonia presents contrastings environmental characteristics and landscapes, wich offer diverse resources for past human societies. Central Western Patagonia is particular in that it shows biomes ranging from evergreen forests in the west to semiarid steppes in the east, thereby providing a good case for assessing differential procurement of resources. The Cisnes valley, is located on an ideal area for studying such a problem since it connects this ecoogical diversity and has yielded human occupations starting at vthe onset of the Holocene at "El Chueco 1" considering it evidences connectivity networks with other sites within this river basin, and the changing climatic conditions and landscape. The anthracological scope contributes to this research through defining" chaînes opératoires", where both the procurement of raw materials and the knowledge of the environment and its natural resources, are considered major components of human decition-making. This constitutes unexplored field in this region. This paper presents a novel approach for the study of fuel management in Central Western Patagonia during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition and through the Holocene. We explore the anthracological assemblages of "El Chueco 1" to analyzere resouce procurement strategies under the assumption that they must have been different and adaptive to changing landscapes.
