Résumé

In Paris, the isolated young foreigners are facing an administrative evaluation of their situation, which seeks to determine if they are or not minors, and therefore, potentially protected. Several hundred files of young people were studied, and some in-depth interviews were realized. Our study highlights the categorization of these young people as “minors“ or “majors“, linked to their physical appearance and the coherence of their narrative. This shows the influence of gender, race, class and age in these administrative decisions. Such categorizations are intended to distinguish between legitimate applicants (the “real“ minors) and illegitimate applicants (young foreigners).
