Socio-demographic Changes in the Family and their Impact on the Socio-Political Behavior of the Youth in Post-Revolutionary Iran

Résumé

Iran’s sociopolitical environment has been dramatically transformed during the last three decades. The young age structure of Iranians, especially the significant percentage of the people under the age of 25 years, is often presented as the main factor behind these changes. No doubt, the youth constitute a major factor that can be held accountable for the recent transformations, but based on the existing statistics (more exactly since 1956), the youth have always constituted a large share of the Iranian population with those under the age of 25 years constituting almost 60 percent of the population. Besides, this feature is not exclusive to Iran. Until the early 1970s, as a result of the high rates of births and deaths, 58 to 65 percent of the population in the entire developing countries consisted of young individuals under the age of 25 years. Yet, none of these countries experienced revolutionary transformations in the 1970s in the way that Iran did in 1978–1979. Therefore, it is unlikely that the sheer number of the youth and the young age structure of population are the only factors accounting for the sociopolitical changes taking place in the country. It is, therefore, necessary to consider all historical, social, demographic, political, and cultural conditions that have influenced the youth at different times and have led them to take on the role of agents of change.
