The Hortillonnages. Interlocking Legacies

Résumé

The Hortillonnages refers to a unique humid environment which, although bordered to the east by the Amiens conurbation, is difficult to define. The many interested parties who are involved refer to an area of 250, 270, or even 300 hectares. Such differences in figures are based on reference points that have changed, or on demarcation criteria that vary and on the multitude of definitions given to this site. The Hortillonnages are the result of interlocking legacies that are to be revealed to explain their morphology and workings. This objective encourages us to reconstruct the development of the site’s landscape. In fact, this approach highlights several socio-economic relationships maintained with the marshland, according to their chronology, and subtle or even unique combinations of heritage from one area to another. This reconstitution work also underlines the operating system specific to each era, with elements external to the site that weigh on its history.
