Bousbir : la prostitution dans le Maroc colonial

Résumé

"Painters, 'cursed poets,' journalists, sailors, and military personnel stationed in Casablanca have created an erotic legend about Bousbir...” However, Bousbir is not merely another document that would feed the exoticism and picturesque nature of this Casablanca neighborhood constructed in 1923 by the French Protectorate authorities to centralize prostitutes. It constitutes an ethnographic monograph conducted in 1949 and 1950 by two physicians, Jean Mathieu and P.-H. Maury, as part of a broader investigation overseen by Robert Montagne, which resulted in the publication of the work 'Birth of the Moroccan Proletariat.' The authors depict prostitution in close proximity to the lived experiences of these women. Through life narratives, statistical data, photographs, everyday speech... they approach their subject as an economic phenomenon and situate it within the realm of social relations and the dynamics of change characterizing Moroccan society at the time. This work may resonate with other research conducted today in Morocco or in other societies affected by the practice of prostitution.
