Notre-Dame Is Burning: Learning From the Crisis of a Superstar Religious Monument

The fire at the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris on 15 April 2019 was a major crisis at one of the most renowned religious monuments in the world. Using crisis management theories, the article presents three readings: the crisis-event, the crisis-process and the crisis-normal expression of monument management. It provides a dense description, going beyond simple facts or appearances by presenting in detail the context, emotions and management of the crisis. It draws lessons from the crisis in the management of religious heritage.
