The myth of genius and the fecundity of writing: Flaubert and Proust
As part of a wider reflection on the category of “works from early in life,” this article approaches the juvenile output of Flaubert and Proust from a literary and stylistic perspective, aiming to demonstrate the presence of a phenomenon allegedly peculiar to youth: the myth of the inspired writer. This myth, which was later superseded, is a source of an overrepresentation of certain stylistic devices that, later on, would no longer or rarely be found in their major works.
