Do employees in the cultural sector adhere more strongly to their company's goals than those in other sectors?

Résumé

Many current and future members of the labour force aspire to work in the cultural sector. Although they may not intend to become artists or creators themselves, they favour – and even feel a vocation for – jobs producing something of symbolic or aesthetic value. Does this apparent appeal result in cultural organizations fostering stronger employee adherence to their goals than organizations in other sectors? Using French data from a national survey of industrial relations, the author compares statements by employees in non-cultural occupations in cultural organizations with those of employees in other sectors of the economy. Working in the cultural sector does not appear to significantly increase the probability of employees adhering to the goals of their organization.
