Lexical variation in dialectal zoonymy, according to the data of the Roman Linguistic Atlas
The dialectal zoonymic data analysed within the framework of the Roman Linguistic Atlas provided a substantial corpus of designations of insects, arachnids, amphibians, reptiles, annelids, birds and wild mammals, which made it possible to reflect on the mechanisms of creation of this type of lexicon. The study of semantic motivation, taking into account the theoretical framework proposed by Mario Alinei for the Atlas Linguarum Europae, has
brought to light large categories of animal representations which often refer to ancestral beliefs attested in several different linguistic areas. This contribution synthesizes with a few examples the cases illustrated by three volumes of the ALiR devoted to animal designations.
