THE TRENDS AND DYNAMICS OF NIGERIA’S FARMER-HERDER CONFLICTS (2014-2019)

Résumé

This study analyses the trends and dynamics of Nigeria’s farmer-herder conflicts between 2014 and 2019. Relying on Nigeria Watch and Nigeria Security Tracker databases, the study found out there is a steady increase in the incidents of farmer-herder violence in Nigeria. There are new triggers to the conflicts including: local politics, poor implementation of anti-grazing laws, and fake news. Also, the temporal analysis did not find any indication of climate hazards has causative factors in the farmer-herder conflicts. The study points to local political actors and vested interests that appear to be more active and interested in shaping the outcomes of the conflicts.
