Stories of stabilisation

Lise Bernard

Résumé

This introductory chapter to Part One demonstrates that work, the couple, and housing are significant factors of stability. Having a job, even a modest one, with an assured future or with possibilities for development is a precious resource for establishing a social position. So is being in a couple, which (given the rise of women’s employment) often means they can count on two incomes, thus making costly possessions more attainable and serving as a buffer should one member of the couple have a decline in income. Lastly, access to homeownership or the location of a home can make it possible to maintain a distance from the most disadvantaged fractions of the working classes. This chapter also shows that the histories of the studied households present singularities, especially regarding family members’ resources, experiences of family life, and generations. By presenting a variety of ways of achieving stability, including how unpredictable and fragile those paths can be, our research to reconstruct histories of stabilisation.
