Decorative art relating to floors comes from the Near East, in particular from Asia Minor. It spread throughout the Hellenized areas, then in the Roman Empire, persisting in the medieval worlds.
Adapting the techniques of this craft to indigenous materials and uses, the mosaicists of the ancient Maghreb developed specific decorative frames. While implementing geometric patterns shared in the great Mediterranean koine, they interpreted them in styles that today appear very characteristic. We wonder about these frames in the Maghreb, trying to identify their sources, but also about their distribution, or not, in the other geographical areas of the western Mediterranean.
