The identification of thousands of charcoal samples from the sites of Shillourokambos and Khirokitia presents a picture of the cypriote vegetal landscape during the Neolithic. The inhabitants of Shillourokambos and even more those of Khirokitia axploited the whole of their territory with the aim of collecting fuel and wood for working. An anthracological zonation in five phases is proposed. Olive tree is frequently seen at Shillourokambos, and this is an original feture in regard to the contemporary regional data. At Khirokitia several biotope were exploited throughout the sequence, but a real break, connected with the drying up of the climate and/or an intensification of anthropic pressure, becomes apparent at the time of the establishment of the village west of the enclosure wall.
