Language, identities and ideologies : a new era for Sudan
Résumé
This paper analyses the spread of Arabic in Sudan based on the Population Censuses of 1956 and 1993 and a number of language surveys. It questions the impact of language shift on self-claimed ethnic affiliation and shows that in Sudan there is now a huge gap between language and ethnicity, which raises the issue of future language policies
