On the basis of a sample of nineteenth century novels (selected by titles), it is possible to sketch a value model of the grandparent, rather different from the merely elderly who are often portrayed as abejct. In the most typical case a child has only one living grandparent, a grandmother still young, in good health and in easy curcumstances, consequently able to live alone. Frequent use of the theme of the orphaned child, especially with a surviving grandfather, reminds us that in ordinary circumstances the role of grandparents is circumscribed by the incontestatble prerogatives of parents. Their principal functions are those of moral education and affectionate complicity (represented as a final period of intense happiness) ; the child, according to Victor Hugo, lives in a world dominated by harsh paternal authority. This idealization of the grandparent has its origin not in nostalgia for the patriarchal household but in a self-glorification of the bourgeois family ; it anticipates many of the characteristics of the contemporary model.
