‘‘Handicap'' is a word that has come into general use in French to designate impairments and disabilities. The purpose of this article is to examine the representations which give meaning to the notion of handicap in everyday language. It looks at their content and
variation according to the ways in which social relations are organized. It is based upon ethnographic work that was carried out on how people labelled as ‘‘mentally handicapped'' related to their neighbours in a small Brittany city. It uses the cultural analysis developed by Mary Douglas to analyse types of social construction of handicap.

L'usage de la notion de handicap s'est généralisée en français pour désigner les incapacités et les désavantages. L'objet de l'article est d'examiner les représentations par lesquelles la notion de handicap acquiert une signification dans la vie quotidienne. Il analyse les contenus du handicap et ses variations en fonctions en fonction de l'organisation des relations sociales de voisinage. Le travail de terrain a été réalisé à Tréguier, une petite ville de Bretagne, auprès de personnes étiquetées "handicapées mentales " et auprès de leurs voisins. Il mobilise l'analyse culturelle développée par Mary Douglas pour expliquer les différents types de représentations associées à la notion de handicap.
