Topicalisation, thématisation et anaphore en arabe
Résumé
TOPICALIZATION, THEMATIZATION AND ANAPHORA IN ARABIC Most linguists agree that we must distinguish between syntactic subject on the one hand and theme or topic on the other. The latter is mainly characterised in terms of its effects on prosody or word order. There is however a great variety of definitions for this notion. Among Arab grammarians, the notion of topic as the first term in an utterance is fundamental. It maps onto either subject or theme (identified as such in dislocation). This leads us to propose a threefold distinction between subject, topic and theme, on the basis of Arabic evidence. This is related to three different planes or "viewpoints", following Claude Hagège. Evidence from Mauritanian Arabic dialect allows us to specify the role of anaphora, as well as intonation, in thematization. This is seen in comparison with rhematization and topicalization.
