Numerals

Résumé

Arabic numerals represent a very particular field of the lexicon. They concern a very small number of roots because, at least originally, all numbers, apart from zero are formedby a combination of limited series of twelve numbers (1–10, 100 and 1,000). These roots mainly belong to a common semantic background. Cardinals have several usages that correspond to different syntactic function, in which they belong to different linguistic categories such as noun, pronoun, and adjective. In Arabic, the situation is particularly complex because these categories can change, not only with the syntactic function, but also according to the definitness of the noun and the appropriate numeral, with significant differences between one variety of Arabic to another.
