La botanique de Hildegarde de Bingen
Résumé
This article gives a general presentation of Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179 ) and her works, in particular her naturalistic writings who are situated to a certain extent in the tradition of the monastic medicine, while distinguishing themselves by many original features. The German abbess described the therapeutic virtues of the elements of the three kingdoms of the natural world in her natural encyclopedia, Liber subtilitatum diversarum naturarum creaturarum also known as Physica, but she pays doubtless a greater attention to the vegetal world. We present here briefly her botanical work and the problems which it raises, in particular linguistic. Hildegard indeed undertook to list and to name the reality but sometimes the universal word, the Latin one, was lacking to her: and the use of Germanic terms or even of periphrasis to describe the plants makes often their identification more difficult. This paper reminds to finish that Hildegard also composed a Lingua ignota, a lexicon composed of about one thousand words in which plants also play an important role; an appendix proposes a sample of the " Herbarium " in the Lingua ignota, as the first editor of this mysterious lexicon, cardinal Pitra, called it.
