This article takes another look at the problem of methods posed by interviews with top administrators. Based on socio-historical research carried out with high civil servants, it argues in favour of an approach combining a semi-directive interview with a form of participatory objectivation, which authorises introducing other tools mobilised by the researcher, such as statistics, archives, etc., into the scope of these asymmetrical interviews. It also deals with a variety of issues arising in research on "elites": refusal to tape interviews, prior author-isation before quoting, the effects of dissemination of social science research among top administrators.
