The place that man occupies in Gregory of Nazianzus's writings is very signifiant. His anthropology finds its best expression in the use of the exegesis already used by the Fathers who preceded him, i.e. that man has been created in the image of God. The phrase "in the image" is a real potentiality which should lead man not only to strive towards it, but to achieve his union with Christ and thus to become an "image of God" in his turn. It is precisely in Christ that all the dramatic events with which man is surrounded find their true meaning, namely the completion not only of our human archetype, which was given from the start, but also the plenitude of man in the end, the state which man was predestinated to reach. Hence comes that Gregory's anthropological analysis can be counted among the most original ones both in the old and the new Christian literature.
