Résumé
This article discusses Latin American studies globally, and specifically in the United States, in the second half of the twentieth century. It argues that the intellectual freedom and financial security of American universities provided the essential context for meaningful and essential cultural studies. Other themes include the political history of Latin America, cultural influences on Latin American writing, and fiction as a tool to create a South American identity.
