My Unloved Witches
Mes sorcier mal aimés
Résumé
The author traces the career of two notorious witches among the Evuzok, a sub-population of the Beti of Southern Cameroon, and describes how he himself was “caught” by someone he was led to recognize as a witch. In doing so, he tries to identify the general relational conditions under which witchcraft accusations and their attendant equivocations emerge: tensions deriving structural contradictions in the social field, a mode of sociality in which the other’s point of view is a privileged source of personal identity, and the lack of appropriate emotional response on the part of the accused.
