By dramatizing a black man murdering a white woman, the end of Othello makes the spectators feel uncomfortable and outraged, so much so that it sometimes leads 192 artists to imagine alternative translations and endings. This article studies the filmic representations of this hatred of the end of Othello. The short Italian film Che Cosa Sono Le Nuvole? (Pasolini, 1967) and the ‘Sassy Gay Friend: Othello’ video posted on YouTube in 2010 have appropriated an eminently theatrical topic and handled it in a transfictional way, using distance and humour. Although Pasolini’s film and the ‘Sassy Gay Friend’ video are embedded in different contexts and do not share the same aesthetic agenda, they nevertheless both ask the same fundamental question: can films and stage productions of Othello which stick to Shakespeare’s original end escape a view that verges on racism and sexism in order to denounce deadly prejudice?
