A State-of-the-Art Literature Review of the Business Model Concept in the IS Discipline

Résumé

Business model (BM) research in the Information Systems (IS) field emphasizes a lack of consensus in the BM definition, still considered vague and fuzzy after more than a decade of research. With this paper we offer a semantic analysis of BM definitions adopted in the IS domain for the selected period of time 2009-2014. Using a structured methodology, we review the titles and abstracts of 108 articles from IS literature, examine a significant subset of 50 articles and code 22 BM definitions. Our work makes three main contributions. First, presenting a BM definition schema, it is helpful in assuaging the fuzziness associated with the business model definition. Second, it presents a methodized technique for a semantic complete and repeatable analysis. Finally, it discusses the current limitations of the BM definition and offers the basis for future research.
