Stefan Zweig considered his book Triumph und Tragik des Erasmus von Rotterdam (1934) as one of his most personal works. The author wrote this historical-literary biography with a sense of urgency after Hitler’s ascendance to power in Germany to echo his humanist and pacifist beliefs. The fact that the Dutch thinker is also mentioned in other works produced by Zweig and in his numerous epistolary exchanges shows how Erasmian thought influenced his works and life as a staunch European, allowing him to address the concerns of the interbellum period. This article is a reflection around this book in order to understand the importance of Erasmus’s position on the humanist and European ideas of the Austrian author as well as his wish to oppose, through writing, intellectual weapons to Nazi and totalitarian propaganda which were, according to him, symbols of the failure of the European spirit.
