Sarah Moon has made several films inspired by tales, such as The Red Thread, a very personal adaptation of “La Barbe bleue”, in 2005. The article questions the way this story is told, by an artist who is feeding on her previous aesthetic experiences. Indeed, Sarah Moon first became famous working in fashion, and then she began doing visual art and cinema. Her re-appropriation of the source text is doubly a feminine point of view: on the one hand, she embraces the point of view of the young heroine—as did Perrault himself, and we know that this story could be read as a feminist one; on the other hand, she puts herself in the position of storyteller by telling herself the story on voice off. In her own way, she recounts the only Perrault’s tale that is not recognized as a tale: she recontextualizes the secular history and invents another destiny to the heroine, by interweaving the still and animated images, the music and the voice, the past and the present, beauty and crime.
