Résumé

From the Introductoire d’astronomie, first astronomical work written in French ca 1270, to a previously unknown compilation of astronomical parts of L’Image du monde, a book dating back to the first quarter of the 15th century, latin and arabo-latin astronomical traditions were gradually brought into French. This transfer was achieved through translations, adaptations, compilations and commentaries. They produced works related to the luni-solar astronomy of comput (calendars, almanacs and tables), as well as texts offering theoretical models of the world system, based on mathematical and geometrical traditions, instructions for astronomical instruments and sphere treatises. The French authors had to describe the sky and the world in a language which was still lacking specific scientific and technic vocabulary. In order to do so, they resorted to various lexical creation processes, such as loans and semantic copies of the latin original, or morphologic derivations and semantic specification from French words in common usage. Our aim is to understand how this lexical blooming, intrinsic to the transfer of a scientific field in a new language, gave rise to a specific lexicon, and ultimately to examine to what point this lexicon became an accurate terminology during the time period under review. This thesis includes a general study of the translatio of astronomy in French, editions of the works of this period, and a lexicological analysis of certain terms, either specific or made so by the context. It is the first research on astronomy in French at the end of the Middle Ages, written in order to contribute to the history of specific lexicon in French.
