In the context of increased awareness of sensorial aspects of urban spaces and a shift in landscape theory, which seeks to overcome the divisions between the landscape as a partially externalized physical object, on the one hand, and an imaginary, internalized product, on the other, the "multisensory landscape" remains a largely unexplored theme. Few, if any research has considered the multisensory landscape as an objet in and of itself, and this in spite of the preponderance of studies on mono‐sensory landscapes. The objective of this research is therefore to understand both the conditions required for, and the specific contributions of, considering sensorial factors in urban planning policies by means of multisensory landscapes ‐ to be considered here as the system of relationships between human beings and their physical environment. The thesis proposes to study the multisensory landscapes of 3 sustainable neighborhoods in northern Europe (WGT in Amsterdam, Augustenborg and Bo01 in Malmö) via a methodology that telescopes in a progressive manner the following elements: a diagnostic (including a "documented diagnostic", a “classic” urban and landscape diagnostic, and a sensory approach of the site); semi‐structured interviews of stakeholders involved in the consultation, conception, realization and/or management of such projects; and most importantly a method of investigation of the neighborhoods by means of brief open‐ended interviews, “multisensory walks” and "multisensory pouches" (methods elaborated specifically for this research), carried out with the residents. This thesis shows that multisensory landscapes, by virtue of their spatial, social and sensory make up, can provide a mean of exchange and create dialogue between urban planners and residents. The potential for mediation is reinforced by the fact that multi‐sensibility addresses not only the sensorial relationships themselves, but equally engages a variety of other themes, allowing for the expression of emotion and feeling. In specific regard to sensory relationships, this thesis demonstrates that, despite the primacy of vision, other senses are undeniably present in the discussion, albeit in varying proportion, and bearing “qualitative" information (in terms of relatively common sensory markers). This thesis questions both the sensorial nature of so‐called sustainable neighborhoods and their recognition as such ‐ landscape being one of the indicators of both the perception and experience of sustainability. By virtue of the themes they reference, landscapes may act as a tool for decision‐ making that could address what has yet to be taken into consideration by urban sustainable development: aesthetic aspects of sustainability; accompanying changes in lifestyle and behaviour; and the involvement of residents in the planning process and the management of the territories in which they live. In fine, landscapes may contribute to the (re)consideration of sustainable urban development as a more “sensible” process that would emphasize habitability rather than the technical “eco‐management” of urban space. From a methodological point of view, the assessment of the approach as a whole, and the multi‐ sensory pouches in particular, has shown that under certain circumstances the “sensible resident” can find his or her voice, and thus be taken into consideration in the development and elaboration of urban projects. A map of the findings (in one of the three neighborhoods) is a potential support for discussions as well as the involvement of all stakeholders. It could permit, over time, a truly sensitive consideration of urban space.
