Path figures and forms in the films of Charles Chaplin

The path is the pattern and schematization of a route, the shape and shaping of an environment, measurement of a journey and journey itself. He is movement and, on the move, the “past” of a journey, and also its fate. He’supdating, and at the same time, is updated by the “hodological” space of the characters, thereby expressing aconception of being in the world as well as the compositional logic and inner thought of the film. But what is actuallythe specific nature of the path in Chaplin’s work that we’re about to study in this dissertation? In Chaplin’s films, thefigure of the path is haunting us right from the first appearance of The Tramp on screen, establishing with his “thereand back” stepping the quintessence of the chaplinian thinking (that of the character, the actor, and the author): howto resist a force that seeks to annihilate or channel us ? How to resist when we’re constantly retracing our steps, onthe same path, and simultaneously opening the way for new paths? We will at first study the question of the street asan environment (that of the author and actor as well as that of the character in the films), we will explore the paths wetake in the social area of Chaplin’s films as a figuration of his vision of the world as a filmmaker. Secondly, we willunravel the mechanisms of the artwork and its inner journey, that is, how the forms and figures of the path becomeperceptible, how the patterns of the path do order and structure the entire filmography of the filmmaker, from thebeginning of his career until the end, bringing us to interpret his entire work as a path figure coming back endlessly.
