Rural Landscape and Borderland Farming on the upper Rhine Frontier in roman Times

Michel Reddé

Résumé

Many ancient studies have outlined the capacity of the hinterland of the Roman Frontier to feed the Army through the quick development of a new landscape of villas. At the contrary recent research focuses on the difficulties to supply the troops in several areas, namely in the Low Countries, because of their unfavorable ecology. This essay, based on the case of the French-German-Swiss excavations of Oedenburg (now partially published in French and German), will try to analyze the borderland farming in another unwelcoming environment.
