This article proposes a brief analysis of the process leading to the foundation of a new ancestral land (tanindrazana) among the Betsileo of Madagascar. It shows that such a foundation always implies a moral dilemma and an important transformation of the founding group’s social relations with their kinsmen who have stayed on the original tanindrazana. The process of transformation of these relations ends up in a quite radical break materialized by the construction of a new tomb for the founders and their descendants. A ceremonial transfer of ancestors to the new tomb ritually completes the break.
