Preliminary notes on the languages of the Bumthang group

Résumé

Historical phonology of the Bumthang group of languages of Central Bhutan (Tibeto-Burman), with detailed analysis of their relation to Tibetan, and remarks on Tamang and Dakpa. Unlike Tibetan "dialects" and Dzongkha (the national language of Bhutan), Bumthang does not continue Old Tibetan; instead, with Tamang and Dakpa, they share a common descent.
The paper presents original data on Kurtoe and 3 dialects of Bumthang proper, as well as Mangdep, all from Bhutan.
