Manner vs place of articulation in the Kiranti initial stops

Résumé

Phonological reconstruction of the Kiranti or East Himalayish subgroup of Tibeto-Burman. Voiced and unvoiced series are reconstructed, with divergent evolutions depending on the place of articulation. The Eastern group shows a Germanic devoicing, with the voicing oppostion transphonologised into aspiration. Development of a partial glottal series (ɓ, ɗ) is proposed to explain the voicing "flip-flop" observed between western and southern subgroups in the dental and bilabial orders.
