Sextus Empiricus' Style of Writing
Résumé
The aim of this paper is to examine the characteristics of the skeptical style of writing in Sextus Empiricus' extant oeuvre. Although the Pyrrhonian philosopher criticizes the art of rhetoric in AM II, all his work shows signs of a " skeptical rhetoric ", which is characterized by three distinctive features, namely: the intention to speak pragmatikôs, the claim that the skeptic's utterances must be understood as subjective avowals, and the production of history of all of the Dogmatists' disagreements. Understanding the peculiarity of the skeptical art of writing may help us to define the real aim of the Pyrrhonian discourse.
