Abstract : Since M. A. K. Halliday and R. Hasan's founding work on the issue of coherence and cohesion in English (Cohesion in English, Longman, 1976), linguists have continued investigating this crucial question which, surprisingly enough, has not so far been explored by scholars in the field of Translation Studies. Yet translators are constantly faced in their daily work with the question of how to transpose and render the coherence of the language of a text into another language. This volume of Palimpsestes addresses this specific issue and brings together papers by scholars and translators who all examine texts with the purpose of understanding how a passage "hangs together" as a text and how this can be rendered into another language according to various genres, registers, and periods. The volume opens on an essay in homage to late Henri Meschonnic whose own discourse is here deconstructed in order to emphasize its force and coherence. Several of the following articles deal with the issue from the point of view of textual cohesion. Some authors use a contrastive approach to address the question of translating anaphoric relations and link-words in argumentative texts and in film dialogues while other contributors examine a specific work in its entirety. The latter point out the difficulties that lie in transposing a type of coherence stemming from the consistency of a contemporary young voice, a forceful autobiographic style, a specific theme, or a dramatic rhythm. All the articles allow the reader to perceive how an original type of coherence is transposed into another language through the use of other linguistic and stylistic means.
