School dropout and school climate

Résumé

Several researches showed evidence that being bullied is a major reason for truancy and does affect academic results. On the other hand, the school social climate does have an influence on school bonding and the way pupils behave. Very often, school dropout is also associated to juvenile delinquency as a systematic link. This conference sets out to explore the link between school climate and school dropout. It will present a synthesis of previous research as well as some results drawn from three research led by the author: one on the reasons for truancy amongst lower secondary school pupils (2380), another research on pupils aged 12-16 years old, at risk of dropping out of school dropout in France (N=1672) and some qualitative research on the process of dropping out of school where the author interviewed young people who were dropping out or had dropped out of school.
