Voice Therapy: Limits and Wrong Compensation

Speaking includes long term behavioral habits (educational & cultural), emotional factors related to one's personality, a defined speaking situation, Speech involves different dimensions such as respiration (respiratory pattern), voicing (glottic closure), articulation and resonance. The voice user is generally not aware of these dimensions before voice failure. Voice therapy is an important part of the treatment for benign vocal fold lesions or vocal dysfunction but most of the voice disorders have more than one contributing aetiological factor that has to be identified. It needs a multidisciplinary or multi-therapeutic management through a team approach to insure coaching voice disorders. Voice therapy can't be done without the patient's involvement and active participation. Vocal management should be tailored to the individual needs of each patient.
