Reported speech is made up of several canonic forms. But these forms are porous and sometimes not clearly compartmentalized. This leads to a form of hybridity, and creates what we propose to call mimetic reported speech, a feature characterised by the presence of elements which come from the original utterance or which belong to other forms of reported speech. This paper will then examine whether mimetic reported speech constitutes a new form of reported speech, or if it is only a variant of the canonic form. A distinction will then be made between mimetic reported speech and intrinsically hybrid forms of reported speech, which result from the combination or mixture of two or several forms of reported speech. The aim of this article is thus to distinguish between these two formal configurations in order to clarify the theoretical status of each form.
