The institutionalization of Applied Linguistics in the USA

Résumé

This paper emphasizes some points characterizing the emergence of American Applied Linguistics in the 1940-50s : the impact of War effort on the emergence of Applied Linguistic and the early use of technologies in language teaching which originated from the interaction between language sciences and war sciences. The interaction between linguistics and language teaching is addressed through the following points : how the alledged scientificity of principles and methods used in the description of Amerindian languages in the 1930s-1940s in the wake of Boas, Sapir and Bloomfield, were adapted to language teaching, leading to the « structural approach » ; the issues at stake in the conflicts between language teachers and linguists about teaching methods ; finally the impact of language teaching on post-war American linguistics.
