The Autumn of the Nahda in Light of the Arab Spring: Some Figures in the Carpet
Résumé
This article is a conversation with Hourani’s work. It aims to situate Arab intellectuals in a social system [not just a class system or a religious hierarchy] and to suggest a new understanding of the Zeitgeist of Hourani’s ‘liberal age.
In order to demonstrate how to discover and use the concrete conditions of production of knowledge, it concentrates on two figures, Kazem al-Daghestani and Nazira Zayn al-Din. Both write and publish in the bilad al-sham (Syria, Lebanon), and both are active writers during and after Hourani’s “liberal age”.
