Drought, Social Inequalities, Adaptation, and Farmers’ Mobility in the Konya Plain of Turkey
Résumé
Climate change brings different challenges to different countries, and to
7 different groups and regions within countries. In Turkey, drought and desertification
8 are regional challenges that are exacerbated by climate change. A coordinated and
9 realistic public policy that takes into account the social consequences of drought
10 does not exist. As a result, drought adaptation typically takes the form of sponta-
11 neous, short-term measures that sometimes produce new social inequalities in
12 addition to existing ones. Using a case study of the Konya Plain, I describe the
13 physical impact of drought and climate change in the region, provide examples of
14 the types of social inequalities that exist, and show how these inequalities influence
15 the adaptive capacity and livelihoods of farmers exposed to desertification and
16 drought, with a particular focus on mobility as an adaptation process.
